Department of Dance presents Converging Pathways

The Case Western Reserve University Department of Dance will present Converging Pathways, March 21, 22 and 23 at 8:00 p.m. and March 24 at 2:30 p.m. at the Mather Dance Center on the CWRU campus. The dance thesis concert includes works by Master of Fine Arts candidates Carissa Bellando and Chun-Jou Tsai and will premiere group works and solos danced by graduate and undergraduate students.

About the works:

A new group work, Time River, by Chun-Jou Tsai is set to the music of Philip Glass is an ensemble work for eight dancers that explores the continuum of the natural phenomena of people coming in and out of one’s life throughout our collective journeys through time. At the heart of the dance is the seemingly unconscious passing of time as well as the importance of living ‘in the here and now.’

A solo performance, Rivela, by Carissa Bellando will take the audience through a woman’s journey towards acceptance of self. Emboldened by the acknowledgement of others, she strives to overcome constraints, builds confidence as a mature woman, and finds the fortitude to reveal her true nature to others and thus honor herself.

Bellando and Tsai will perform a duet titled Plain of Passage created by Karen Potter, Dance Department Chair. The new work is set to the music of J. Metcalfe and explores the bond of friendship while they draw nigh to pursuing their individual paths.

Soliloquize, choreographed by Tsai, draws from previous creative pursuits as well as the concepts and methods of exploring movement that have intrigued artists such as William Forsythe and Trisha Brown. The work is a soliloquy through movement and is performed to the music of John Cage and Matthew Doyle.

Sea Swept, choreographed by Bellando and set to music by John Adams, is an abstract work for nine female dancers that draws inspiration from the ocean. The dance features continual states of motion and energy, from calm and tranquil to rough and tempestuous and portrays the kinetic movement of the ocean during these various passages.
